Frequently asked questions AND ACADEMY RULES.

 FAQs

We aim to provide the ideal learning environment for all our members - balancing the creative, social, modern aspects of combat sports and wellness with the culture and discipline of traditional martial arts.

Here are a few friendly tips for academy etiquette - we ask that you observe and follow them, and your contribution to supporting a friendly, safe, and clean environment will be much appreciated!

General House Rules

  • Book on to every session you plan on attending via the app or website.

  • No shoes, food, gum or drinks on the mat.

  • No bare feet outside of the mats.

  • Respect everyone’s space and store your gear and bags in the appropriate areas.

  • Make sure you leave the toilets in a clean and friendly state. If they need attention please make an instructor aware.

  • Put equipment back where it belongs.

  • The spaces in the car park in front of the building are reserved for the coaches only. There is a big pay and display car park opposite on Bond St. There’s also free on road parking on both Bond and William St, plus a few other roads locally.

  • Maintain a positive attitude and enjoy training!

Code of Conduct

At Parity Martial Arts & Wellness, we’re committed to creating a safe, respectful, and high-quality training environment for everyone. Please read and follow the Code of Conduct carefully - it’s designed to keep you, your training partners, and our community healthy and thriving.

We’re all here to get and stay healthy

  • Wash your gi, belt and activewear after every class.

  • Keep your fingernails and toenails neatly trimmed.

  • If you have long hair, make sure it’s tied up.

  • All metal objects, jewellery, piercing, necklaces, or other such items should be removed before training.

  • No bare feet in the bathroom or area outside of the mat. Boxing/wrestling shoes must be put on inside the gym and taken off when using the restroom and leaving for the night.

  • Please keep the air fresh around you—avoid perfumes, colognes, or heavy scents.

  • If you are sick, please stay home and rest. If you are coughing and sneezing in a class, you are leaving a trail of germs that might infect your fellow students.Training can wait until you’re healthy.

  • If you have any type of skin infection (staph, ringworm, etc.) you will not be allowed to train until it is cleared up. These bacterial and fungal infections are highly contagious and can quickly spread throughout the entire class. If you suspect you may have an infectious skin condition or are not sure, ask an instructor.

  • Please leave training gear clean and organised. We’ve provided antibacterial sprays and cleaning wipes throughout the gym; make use of them to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria from one piece of gear to another. If you can’t find them or see our supply is running low, let us know so we can help!

Safety is our priority

  • Strikers, don’t let anger or emotions drive your sparring; no one is forced to spar. Sparring is to help elevate the skills learned in class, not an opportunity for one to bully someone less experienced. Always communicate the level of sparring you would like to practice and protect yourself at all times.

  • Grapplers, always respect the tap: release whatever hold you have immediately and disentangle yourself as quickly as is safe whenever you feel your partner tap. Always try to tap your partners body directly, or otherwise tap or say “tap”  loudly and clearly. Remember to tap early and often to avoid injury.

  • Kids must remain supervised before and after their classes. No youth members are allowed in the S&C area (weights and cardio equipment) unattended. Minimum age for utilising the S&C area without direct supervision is 16 years.

Always treat your fellow students with respect

  • Leave your ego at the door - we're all here to learn.

  • Be coachable - it's what you're paying your fees for. Try to understand the purpose of each drill and make sure you're upholding your part (i.e. dont go overboard with intensity on a flow drill, or drift away when you're supposed to be an active training partner). Observe the technique with full focus.

  • Let the coaches do the coaching - it's what they are there for. Helping your partner to understand the drill or breaking down movement is fine, but make sure it's in line with the class at hand.

  • Show up on time so you don't miss key points at the start of the class - and warm up properly. Similarly, don't slink off early and skip your role on the receiving end.

  • Keep it technical day-to-day. Large amounts of hard physical training can result in injury - so the coaches will be deliberately cycling and moderating this throughout the week.

  • Don't waste time in between drills and moving around on the mat. Partner up quickly, line up quickly. Avoid unneccessary distractions and keep a drink bottle close to the mat for quick drink breaks.

  • Be patient and stick it out. Everyone starts as a beginner/white belt.

  • Parity Martial Arts and Wellness is committed to providing a safe place for everyone to train free from harassment based on gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, nationality or ancestry.

  • Please refrain from making jokes that may be perceived as racist, homophobic, or sexist, or are about sexual assault or violence.

  • There is no tolerance for any kind of sexual harassment or coercion, including but not limited to unwanted sexual advances, unwelcome physical contact, or targeted disrespectful or sexually explicit language.

  • If you feel that anyone at the gym, whether an instructor or a student, has engaged in problematic behavior, please bring the issue up with any instructor or owner who you feel comfortable discussing the issue with. We are committed to investigating any reports and responding appropriately, while maintaining confidentiality, to ensure that our gym remains a safe environment.
